Five Best 2011 Cars for College Kids That Will Suit Their Major

Heading off to the first year of College can be a scary time for any young person. And since going to a four year University can sometimes drag on for 6 years or more, the mobility of young ones during those important years is something not to be taken lightly.
So what can you do? Well, many campuses are located in areas where very specialized virtues make them surprisingly appealing to youngster. So why not surprise young kids with a new or used version of the models below?
The following five vehicles all specialize in their own take on “uniqueness” so at least one should appeal. If not, and a young kid demands a Maserati, it will his/her parental mistake in upbringing towards first 18 years. And who knows, you may still be living with your parents and commuting to college, right? Weren’t College Dorms invented because 18 year olds to make them go AWAY?

  •  2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring
                          2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring
If a student is truly practical minded yet hates everything the SUV stands for then this may be the best car choice. With a full 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty in place there should be no need for a student to buy another car for a very long time. At least until their first real job!
The 2011 Elantra Touring is also hugely spacious inside with as much cargo space as a Nissan Murano. For 2011 top of the line SE variants all come with leather seats. The 2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring is an excellent choice for a music major who moonlights in the marching band.  As a tuba player. (Major: Music)

  • 2011 Subaru Legacy

All new for the model year 2010, the 2011 Legacy sedan has a generically handsome exterior and has boatloads of trunk and passenger space for college kid’s friends and, ahem, kegs. But underneath this stylish and fun to drive sedan lies a platform so stiff that it not only passes all the government’s crash test standards with flying colors but it also passes the stricter IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) tests as well.
All Legacy models come with the security of all-wheel drive so this is a great car if a college kid
(son) or daughter is attending school in a Snowbelt state. Sure, an Outback works just as well but it’s easier to trick a teenager into believing that a Legacy is not going to make them look like a “mom. (Major: Skiing a.k.a-never attending class)
  • 2011 VW Golf TDI

Could there be any car more worthy of a student than the humble hatchback Golf? The huge rear cargo area will make it so easy for college kids to move down to college in one trip that anyone might not have to follow them with a U-Haul. Also, take heart knowing that you are raised as an environmentally sensitive individual who also enjoys a bit of fun behind the wheel.
All brand new VW models have free maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles. That should get them at least halfway through school, right? With that huge hatchback this would be a great car for an art major. Oh yeah, in a week long test of a 2010 TDI 6-speed manual we averaged over 43 miles per gallon. Now that savings should buy a lot of art supplies. (Major: Art)

  • 2011 Honda Civic

This truly is the modern day standby for “College Kid Transport.” Why, you ask? Well, because the Honda Civic (in coupe or sedan form) offers everything a kid could need and all the reliability and economy an adult demands.
With only 140 horsepower on tap junior also can’t get into too much trouble but if you loves to drive the manual transmission variants are always a great pick. A Honda stick is so simple to use it is almost comical. Besides the 33 miles per gallon highway rating, the Civic also has the best residual value in its class. Just keep that in mind should junior drop out of school early and they need to help theirselves to pay off their student loans. (Major: Math)

  • 2011 Ford Mustang V6
                                                 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0

College kids just want to look cool and the oldest “cool” standby in the book is the Ford Mustang. Unfortunately most college kids want the V8 model although very few are ready for that especially considering the fact that the all-new for 2011 5.0 liter V8 pumps out over 400 horsepower! Thankfully the smaller standard V6 engine (also new for 2011) now puts out a more rational 300 horsepower.
But the Mustang sport coupe has always been about looking cool, driving fast and trying to stay alive in the process. If  a college guy is joining a Fraternity or Sorority this may well and truly be his only choice.  (Major: Partying)
